Recipe Notes

  • Raw honey is essential — heating destroys its benefits.

Best DIY Cough Syrup for Winter Immunity (Natural Cold & Flu Remedy)

A powerful homemade cough syrup made with onion, ginger, honey + spices to soothe coughs, melt mucus, and boost immunity naturally this winter.
Servings 1 cup
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 1 day

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion thinly sliced
  • 1 large thumb of ginger sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 cup raw honey or enough to fully cover the ingredients
  • Optional but recommended add-ins:
  • 1 –2 garlic cloves
  • 1 slice lemon
  • ½ tsp turmeric + pinch of black pepper
  • 1 small sprig fresh thyme

Instructions

  • Prep the ingredients : Thinly slice your onion and ginger. If using garlic, smash it lightly with the back of a knife — this helps release allicin, its natural antimicrobial compound.
  • Layer into a clean jar : Add onion, ginger, spices, and optional ingredients to a clean, sterilized glass jar.
  • Cover with raw honey : Pour honey over everything until fully submerged.
  • Seal and leave to infuse : Close the jar and let it sit at room temperature for 12–24 hours.
  • The honey will begin to thin out as the onion releases its juices.
  • Use immediately or let it strengthen : You can start using it within a day, but it becomes stronger and more soothing over the next 2–3 days.
