Where to Find Za’atar

Za’atar is a flavourful Middle Eastern spice blend made from dried herbs (like thyme, oregano, and marjoram), sesame seeds, and sumac. You can usually find it in:

  • Grocery Stores: Most large grocery chains now carry za’atar in the spice or international foods aisle—I bought mine from Tesco, and it worked perfectly!
  • Specialty Stores: Look in Middle Eastern or Mediterranean markets for high-quality blends.
  • Online Retailers: You can easily order za’atar on platforms like Amazon or from specialty spice websites.
  • DIY Option: If you can’t find it, you can make your own by mixing equal parts thyme, oregano, sesame seeds, and sumac (if available).

Make sure to store your za’atar in an airtight container to preserve its flavour!

  • 4 tablespoons Light mayonnaise or regular mayo
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
  • 2 garlic cloves smash fresh cloves into a paste
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon za’atar spice blend store-bought works perfectly
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the Garlic: Smash 2 fresh garlic cloves into a smooth paste using a mortar and pestle or the back of a knife.
  • Mix the Base: In a bowl, combine mayonnaise and Greek yogurt until smooth.
  • Add Flavor: Stir in the garlic paste, lemon juice, and za’atar spice blend. Mix until fully combined.
  • Finish with Olive Oil: Drizzle in olive oil and stir. Taste, then add salt as needed.
  • Chill: Let the sauce sit in the refrigerator for at least 5 minutes to let the flavour’s meld. Serve and enjoy!
